The book covers all the monuments featured in the latter publication, but seeks to offer the reader a more detailed account, and understanding, of the town's ancient landmarks. Throughout the book, the text is augmented at intervals by additional details in a small script, which is indented, allowing the reader to choose their own level of information. The text commences with an historical outline of Carlingford's development. This is followed by separate entries on each of the archaeological and historical monuments. These have been arranged so as to form a linear trail through the town. However, if the reader prefers, they can also be read at random. The book along with the Town Trail is designed to be enjoyed on a number of levels. With the aid of the highlighted margins, it can be perused either as a series of quotations (on the coloured pages), as a collection of visual images of an historic town (on pages with a coloured edge), or as a text (white).
